Independence Day

Posted by Meredith Griffin on July 4, 2008

Happy 4th of July! Today is the day that this country, the United States of America, celebrates the signing of its Declaration of Independence. This document declared this nation’s freedom and independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. On this day, we view fireworks, eat way too much, visit with family and friends, and remember the blessings of our liberty as citizens of the United States of America.

I want to encourage all of you to use this day to remember our more significant declaration of independence and freedom; namely, our freedom from sin and death. Galatians 5:1 says,

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

With all that we will do today to celebrate our independence as a nation, let’s not forget that we should daily celebrate the freedom that was bought for us on Calvary’s cross. Enjoy the holiday and stay blessed.

Let’s use a little wisdom

Posted by dlpgriffin on July 2, 2008

Today, I read Proverbs chapter 1 with my son and we discussed what happens to us when we decide to use wisdom.  He talked to me from his nine year old perspective,  regarding what happens when we refuse to listen to wisdom. In Proverbs 1:22 we see the words,  “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?”

I am sure you would agree, that if we merely use wisdom in simple situations we would not find ourselves in such complex problems.  Wisdom is asking us how long are we going to be simple minded?  How long are we going to allow our curiousity to guide us when wisdom is screaming for us to turn back?  How long are we going to reach for people, places and things that tingle our fleshly desires?  If we could just use a little bit of wisdom we would all get where we are supposed to be a tad bit faster.  Wouldn’t you agree?

My son is learning about wisdom this month.  As he learns, I find myself wanting to learn all over again.  I hope these lessons will also bless you as he and I walk through the chapters.

Let me know your thoughts!
